The Whitecaps faced the Minnesota State Mavericks twice over the weekend, dropping both games by the scores of 5-1 and 5-2.
In Friday's game, the Mavericks scored a power play goal in the first period on a nice tip in front, before adding three more tallies in the second, including another power play goal and a shorthanded goal. The Whitecaps got their only score of the game in the second frame when a backhand shot from Amy Menke found the back of the net. In the third, Minnesota State rounded out the scoring by converting on a 2-on-1, bringing the final score to 5-1.
Final shots on goal were 37-30 in favor of the Mavericks. Whitecaps goaltender Allie Morse made 32 saves in the game.
On Saturday, the Whitecaps came out strong, outshooting Minnesota State in the first period 8-5; however, the Mavericks scored the only goal of the period on a nice slapshot that beat Whitecaps goalie Julie Friend. The second period saw the Mavericks extend their lead with three consecutive goals, making the score 4-0.
But in the third, the Whitecaps battled back, outshooting Minnesota State 10-7 and drawing to within two goals. First it was Becky Kortum who fended off a defenseman on a partial breakaway and took a hard shot that beat Maverick goalie Chloe Crosby. The Whitecaps continued to put pressure on the Mavericks for several minutes, and Amy Stech was able to convert on a scramble in front of the Mavericks net, bringing the score to 4-2. However, with 45 seconds left in the game, the Mavericks were able to hit the open net, as Sara Bustad completed her hat trick.
Final score was 5-2 and final shots on goal were 26-25, with the Mavericks having a slight edge. Box scores attached below.
